So, finally having watched the preview, I must say that I’m rather excited about this. Sherlock is very … what I expect, different from le Cumberbatch but yes still essentially Holmes. He’s a little … younger feeling here. Things have happened to him, the drugs most likely, and that has made him lose some of the self assurance that we expect from Holmes.

This is Holmes of the Musgrave Ritual and the Gloria Scott cases … younger, more excited about the clues he finds.

For my opinion of Joan, I think I’m kind of digging her, the way she yells at him when he’s talking to the witness, the way she seems so poised and single minded about her job (and in the jogging footage) but also prone to the Holmes flattery in the way canon Watson was.

She also has the “no longer practicing” medical persona of canon Watson. And as far as Watson was concerned, he felt he had “failed” out of the army. He was on half-pay and his health was a wreak. She’s got this, but somehow she is more poised than I see canon Watson. I would suggest this comes from having been in a position of authority, but she doubts herself at times, and that makes her drive herself harder. 

Normally I can’t see myself in Watson, though he is an “everyman” type character, but Joan … I can see myself as her. 

I would also like to mention that I have had a long-term (as in since Hackers) crush on Johnny Lee Miller, who is also scottish (my one weakness) so … hell yes.

I’m excited about this now.

(Has anyone thought that we could do some serious analysis of Ben vs. Johnny as Sherlock and as the Creature/Victor? How is this not a really good thing?)
