Okay, I see so many people saying ‘it’s because Crowley called Sam a moose in 5.20’, but, guys, let me just set the record straight here, because, yes, I love Crowley and his mammalian nicknames for Sam (even though it is also widely accepted that he meant Moose Mason of Archie Comics fame). However, that is not where the ‘moose’ nickname for Jared started.

Jared’s nickname of ‘Moose’? Came from the late Kim Manners. It was his nickname that he used for Jared, and when he passed away, it was put into the show as homage to him. Likewise with the title on the tape that Dean puts into the deck during his ride in in Swan Song - “Kick it in the Ass” - that was a catchphrase of Kim’s that was used regularly by himself, cast and crew, on set.

So, yes, while it can be said that the ‘moose’ thing grew LARGER in fandom because it was used by Crowley in season 5, the truth of the matter is that Kim Manners was calling Jared ‘moose’ as a nickname for years before that, and that is where it came from.
