I forgot to mention in the gif, but the character, layer overlay, and paint over was done in Paint tool SAI and then edited in Photoshop.

On one hand, this is worse than tracing. This is cheating of the highest order, anybody who uses sketchup should be hanged.
On the other hand I’ve never been worth half a shit at backgrounds, and how much can I honestly expect of myself?
On the third hand, nothing I say will ever get me to use this before I’ve learned to do it in my head.
Ok, I am getting tired of people calling using 3D as “cheating”.
Cheating? Cheating at what? If I entered a draw-background-from-imagination contest, then yeah, this is cheating. But the goal here is to illustrate a graphic novel in a reasonable time. I don’t hear people calling Pixar movies cheating. Why don’t they draw everything by hand? Oh wait, it’ll take a million years before a movie comes out.
I’m not trying to gain false praise so people can say “Oh wow, look how well she can draw backgrounds!” If that were the case, why the hell would I show the work progress and even make a tutorial? People need to keep in mind that different artists have different goals. Yours may be to perfect drawing everything from imagination, mine happens to be to illustrate a story before I’m 70, because unlike Pixar, I am a one woman team doing research, paying rent, and working on 2 graphic novels at the same time. (though this story won’t be released until 2013).
So if you think I should be hanged for that, then you need to seriously open up your mind. Artists aren’t clones programmed to have one goal in mind. That’s not saying we shouldn’t try to improve ours skills without 3D, because it will come in handy for many other situations. I honestly wouldn’t be able to integrate 3D and 2D if I didn’t learn how to draw everything in 2D the old fashioned way. Sketchup just speeds up the process.
So before you closed mindedly shut off the potentials of 3D, ask yourself, what are your goals as an artist, and what’s the best way to get there? Is it to practice until you can show off and say “look at all the backgrounds I can draw without Sketchup!” or is to create something greater than an image about skills? Pixar did, and they seem pretty damn successful to me.
While I do think that telling someone they need to be hanged for using a 3D program is not only very harsh, and uncalled for- Yuumei, I honestly believe the person does have a point in their rant. One of the most challenging aspects of an artist is the ability to draw complex backgrounds for their characters to live in. It’s tough and frustrating, and oftentimes many people tend to just forget about it. I’ve seen you do backgrounds before Yuumei. They are wonderful, however I worry that you might be going down the path of using this program as a crutch for backgrounds as opposed to making them yourself anymore. When you use a substitute like this as a way to avoid doing something challenging- best case scenario, you stagnate on that skill. Worse case scenario- you actually begin to regress. Also going on the defensive and saying that you use it because you want to finish your story before your 70 is in my opinion, a bit of an insult to other comic artists the same age as you, who draw everything in their comics by hand, and still manage to get it done on schedule. The better you are at something, the faster and easier you will get at doing it. Backgrounds included.
Also using Pixar as an example to justify your use of this program is really petty, and also a bit incorrect. While yes Pixar does use digital programs to create their movies, do you realize that they go through tons and tons of drawn, fleshed out concept art of characters and backgrounds before they even THINK about making the final 3D model? Because they do. In fact, every CGI film does. While yes, they are all in a team, Pixar understands the concept of drawing and fleshing out backgrounds first. 3D programs is only a means of which they want to present their final product.
Now we’re getting kind of ridiculous and into the zone of imagining other people’s life without knowing it. How do you know I don’t sketch out a story before using a 3D model? Are all the Fisheye Placebo drawings I’ve been posting not concept art enough for you? I never posted all the concept art, including backgrounds, for Knite, so that must mean they don’t exist, right? I must poop out each story panel as I go, without any planning whatsoever, which is totally why Fisheye Placebo won’t be released until 2013 cuz I just like to make people wait for no reason.
And no, I don’t think I will stagnate or regress on any skills because as I’ve said this so many times before, this process is for COMICS. It is for settings that will be used multiple times, because quite frankly, it’s not worth the time building a model that will be used only once. That will take more time than save which means other backgrounds are still 100% from mind to hand. The only exception for using one time pre-made models is when I’m testing out a technique, which is for practice purposes only. Yeah, practice. Don’t think integrating 3D with 2D figures doesn’t take practice to perfect. So the point is, I’m not telling people to ditch practicing the old way altogether and use 3D from now on. This is to present a faster alternative way of working. If Pixar isn’t enough of an example for you, check out the anime industry that uses a lot of 3D to aid their 2D animation. The newest anime this season, K Project, uses 3D backgrounds rendered to look like 2D, and even the characters had 3D references. They are presenting the work as 2D, but it’s made with heavy 3D aid. What’s your critique then? Go tell the animators for Project K, or heck, all the animators in Production I.G. that their skills are regressing and they will think you’re crazy.
As for comparing to other artists who draws by hand and still get it done on time, good for them. They work their way, I work my way, which includes going to lectures, watching hours upon hours of documentaries, reading crap load of articles/books, and stalking hackers online to get the primary source without media bias as part of my story writing process. This falls into the don’t-compare-people-you-don’t-know category. But hey, maybe those other artists also spend most of their time doing research and they are just so amazing, but I wouldn’t know, so I’m not going to judge. <—- see how that works?
However, NONE of this is even relevant. Does it matter how they work vs how I work? I’m not lying about how I work, and I’m not human trafficking or some illegal shit to get my work done. I’m not giving up drawing backgrounds from imagination either. I’m just using a well know technique from the animation industry to apply to comics to speed up the process. Simple as that.
You can run or you can drive. Sure, you’ll run faster and faster if you practice, but as long as you don’t stop using your legs altogether, it’s hell of a lot faster to get somewhere by driving.
*Sigh* sorry for all the ranting today. I’ve been reading these kinds of comments for a while now, ever since I posted that 3D background tutorial, and all the pent up urge to facepalm at people’s closed mindedness finally exploded. In some ways I am reminded of people who thinks contemporary abstract art is bad compared to realistic Renaissance art. Only those ignorant of basic art history will think art is all about skills at depicting reality. I think I’m going to write an article about what is art one of these days… The shear amount of ignorance floating on the internet is maddening.

Late night doodle
Well, it’s been quite a weekend. Someday, long from now, I will even have an emotional reaction to it, like a person would. I can’t wait! But before I become blinded by this “emotion” experience, there’s a few things I’d like to say. Well, type.
People have told me that this matters, that my life is about to change. I am sure that is true. And change is good — change is exciting. I think — not to jinx it — that I may finally be recognized at Comiccon. Imagine! Also, with my percentage of “the Avengers” gross, I can afford to buy… [gets call from agent. Weeps manfully. Resumes typing.] …a fine meal. But REALLY fine, with truffles and s#! . And I can get a studio to finance my dream project, the reboot of “Air Bud” that we all feel is so long overdue. (He could play Jai Alai! Think of the emotional ramifications of JAI ALAI!!!!) What doesn’t change is anything that matters.
What doesn’t change is that I’ve had the smartest, most loyal, most passionate, most articulate group of — I’m not even gonna say fans. I’m going with “peeps” — that any cult oddity such as my bad self could have dreamt of. When almost no one was watching, when people probably should have STOPPED watching, I’ve had three constants: my family and friends, my collaborators (often the same), and y’all. A lot of stories have come out about my “dark years”, and how I’m “unrecognized”… I love these stories, because they make me seem super-important, but I have never felt the darkness (and I’m ALL about my darkness) that they described. Because I have so much. I have people, in my life, on this site, in places I’ve yet to discover, that always made me feel the truth of success: an artist and an audience communicating. Communicating to the point of collaborating. I’ve thought, “maybe I’m over; maybe I’ve said my piece”. But never with fear. Never with rancor. Because of y’all. Because you knew me when. If you think topping a box office record compares with someone telling you your work helped them through a rough time, you’re probably new here. (For the record, and despite my inhuman distance from the joy-joy of it: topping a box office record is super-dope. I’m an alien, not a robot.) So this is me, saying thank you. All of you. You’ve taken as much guff for loving my work as I have for over-writing it, and you deserve, in this our time of streaming into the main, to crow. To glow. To crow and go “I told you so”, to those Joe Blows not in the know. (LAST time I hire Dr. Seuss to punch my posts up. Yeesh!) Point being, you deserve some honor, AND you deserves some FAQs answered.
